Meta Platforms plans to launch its microblogging app called Threads, days after Twitter boss Elon Musk drew criticism by announcing a temporary limit on the number of messages users can read on his platform.
Threads is expected to launch this Thursday and will allow users to keep their Instagram followers and username, according to a malaysia mobile database posted on Apple's App Store.
The launch represents a direct challenge to Twitter, which has faced numerous controversies since Elon Musk acquired the company for $44 billion in 2022. Last week, the billionaire Tesla CEO announced a series of new restrictions on the app, limiting the number of tweets users can view per day, sparking outrage among many of the platform's users.
While other microblogging sites, such as Mastodon and Blue Sky, have seen their user numbers increase since Elon Musk's acquisition, none have been able to compete with Twitter.
Increase in harmful content
Instagram already has hundreds of millions of registered users and has a history of introducing new features based on the success of other social media companies.
After buying the company, Elon Musk reinstated a number of banned accounts.
Hundreds of advertisers, concerned about the rise of harmful content on the platform, have also halted spending on Twitter, and internal documents seen by Reuters showed that the platform's most active users were beginning to disengage.
Meta did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on a similar launch on the Google Play Store.
